RO_ARCHIVE files - Paris
On April 23rd 2009, in Paris, IESA (Institut d'Etudes Superieures des Arts) hosted the opening of a photography exhibition that synthesized two years of research for the RO_ARCHIVE cultural project, developed under the aegis of the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Curators: Raluca Nestor, Cristiana Radu. Artists: Iosif Kiraly, Bogdan Bordeianu, Michele Bressan, Simona Dumitriu, Bogdan Girbovan, Raluca Ionescu. The opening was structured as a complex event, including lectures by art critics Cristiana Radu and Anca Mihulet, focusing on promoting the RO_ARCHIVE concept and evaluating its importance as cultural project and as artistic and research approach in the contemporary romanian art context. RO_ARCHIVE constructs a network of anchor points with temporal significance; it proposes a discourse on memory that involves the production of undistorted images about our cultural/political/social context. The project establishes a temporal reference from which point the entire system could be reevaluated/restarted, an ideological backup to the network of history. The chosen projects record and investigate the key points of the evolution of public and private space and the transformations undergone in the relations between that space and its inhabitants. They research the dynamics of social layers and the changes in their indefinable view of the world and perception of self. From its forceful collective author, RO_ARCHIVE gives us some of the most powerful images addressing today’s Romania. The National University of Arts in Bucharest thanks its host, Institut d'Etudes Superieures des Arts, and the Romanian Cultural Institute in Paris for their collaboration. The curatorial statement by Raluca Nestor can be downloaded as PDF attachment.
